Assistive robotics simulation

Automated Wheelchair Assistance

A simulated two-wheeled caregiver robot that navigates an apartment, responds to spoken commands, supports VR teleoperation, and autonomously connects to and tows a wheelchair.

  • Built autonomous apartment navigation and wheelchair towing in MuJoCo.
  • Added speech commands and a Meta Quest interface for VR teleoperation.
  • Developed mapping and navigation using RGB images, wheel encoders, and IMU data, with persistent memory of obstacles, landmarks, and routes.

Distributed environmental monitoring

Forest Fire Smoke Monitoring and Notice

A wildfire-monitoring and evacuation-notice system developed by a six-person team for remote communities with limited communications infrastructure.

  • Combined distributed sensor nodes, LoRaWAN communication, and tiered community alerts.
  • Led the mechanical design and fabrication of the environmental sensor enclosure.

Max Planck Institute for the Structures and Dynamics of Matter

Engineer Research Intern

Developed an automated experimental scanning and measurement system combining precision motion control, synchronized data acquisition, embedded hardware, and custom mechanical tooling.

  • Designed closed-loop motion and measurement synchronization for automated raster scans containing as many as 121 positions.
  • Supported position and intensity acquisition at ten measurements per second using Python, C++, hardware APIs, and external triggers.
  • Coordinated five hardware subsystems and a SAMD21 microcontroller through I2C, USB, and trigger signals.
  • Diagnosed hardware-software integration issues using oscilloscopes and multimeters.
  • Designed and machined modular mounting hardware in Fusion 360 and AutoCAD for multi-position experimental profiling.

Undergraduate Intern

Designed an end-to-end laboratory automation platform for synthesizing inflammation-targeting polymer microgels used in drug-delivery research.

  • Designed, machined, wired, and integrated three custom electromechanical laboratory tools.
  • Built an automated pipetting tool, a motorized mechanical fragmentation tool, and a syringe-pump actuator for photopolymerization.
  • Integrated open-source Science Jubilee APIs to execute the synthesis workflow and improve experimental throughput and repeatability.

  • Conducted imaging-data analysis and prototype testing to identify treatment-associated patterns.

About

I entered Engineering Science at the University of Toronto expecting to pursue biomedical engineering, drawn to how engineering can transform healthcare. During my first-year summer at The Maikawa Lab, I designed three electromechanical tools for developing experimental drug-delivery materials. That experience showed me that the work I enjoy most sits at the intersection of robotics, biotechnology, and hands-on system design.

I am now a third-year Robotics Engineering student developing deeper skills in automation, embedded systems, and end-to-end engineering. I am looking for opportunities to build professional experience while continuing to explore applications in biotechnology and human-centered automation.
